As we have been gathering friends to share in the adventure, this question keeps popping up “Why did you name your boat ‘Lady Grey’”? It’s actually quite simple.

We wanted a painting as a memory of our time living in Exeter, New Hampshire. After commissioning Jonalyn to paint for my daughter-in-law, then attending her show “Saving Lives”, we knew we wanted to purchase a painting.
We both fell in love with her watercolor of String Bridge, so we made “Kimball Island Glow” our first official watercolor purchase together!

The way Jonalyn uses light is magical. But what makes her work more special for me is knowing how much time and energy she puts into improving her craft.
She is meticulous with each detail, and if there is something she wants to improve, she goes after it with ferocity. When an artist is that passionate about their work, it comes through in the finished product. Jonalyn’s passion is most definitely evident in each brush stroke.

Athletes, Jon and Jess Hale compete in multi-day events nationwide. They wanted a painting to capture their love of the outdoors, running in beautiful places together.
Jonalyn created this commissioned watercolor painting from the Hale’s photo of them running together over the San Francisco bridge and blended it into this mountain scene.

I’m a photographer. When I visited Jonalyn’s art show “Saving Lives” in Exeter, I had the opportunity to watch her paint a color study for a recent commission. The realization that I could submit one of my photos for Jonalyn to paint was an exciting prospect.
The whole process was fun. The anticipation of seeing the finished work felt like waiting for Christmas! The completed painting was so worth the wait. The particular style and beauty that Jonalyn brings to the table are truly one-of-a-kind.

Born and raised in Whittier, California, she’s lived in Colorado, Virginia, New Hampshire and soon on her sailboat traveling the world with her family.

Mama Grace’s kitchen was alive.
I visited last February and still found food soaking, drying, ripening in her kitchen. Under that paper towel were mung beans sprouting, her fridge was full of food I couldn’t recognize.
Warm enough to paint outside, I packed early for Seabrook, New Hampshire. Near the border of Massachusetts, Seabrook is renown for roughness. The half block deserted beach held several tantalizing lobster boats close to shore.
The last five years, from the Rockies to the Atlantic Ocean, our family has inched closer to the water.
In a few months, we will be living off the coast of South Africa, on our catamaran “Lady Grey”. So many normal things are about to change, but some things will remain the same.
We can all remember certain stories that define us. When you think of your favorites stories growing up, were any about you?
