Quiet Walk in Key West

My husband was walking with F, our oldest son, in the cool of the garden at the Audubon House in Key West, Florida. The shadows and their calm walk moved me to take this picture and paint it the next day from a sketch. I took these “notes” and painted this larger version.

I think the way the dappled light fell across them is my favorite part. I can still feel the calm of this scene, a little oasis in the center of Old Town Key West. The Audubon House and Tropical Gardens were originally used to observe wildlife. Quiet observation now feels strangely out of place next to the tourist T-shirt shops and bustling port holding enormous cruise ships. But in this courtyard, you could imagine it.

Friendship is often like this, a calm oasis in a world of dog-eat-dog. I tried to integrate Dale and F so they are barely distinguishable from the shadows, integrated into the calm and quiet.
