Rainy Nights in Steamboat

A rainy Steamboat night when you could enjoy the layers of reflections and not much traffic. Only a few people walking the streets, ducking under awnings to avoid the steady rain.

Night paintings are called “nocturnes” and this one was particularly challenging to get the sky and pavement dark enough. Once I did, then painting tells the story of what I remember about this small mountain town, the quiet after dark. In the mud season between winter and summer, those streets were wide open. I painted this spot because of I wanted to showcase those emerald green lights. “Rainy Nights in Steamboat” is about how something as utilitarian as asphalt can become a mirror holding streaks of color and movement, if we only look.
